CRISIS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN INDIA
CRISIS OF WASTE MANAGEMENT IN INDIA:
With rapid
urbanisation, the country is facing massive waste management challenge. Almost all
municipal authorities deposit solid
waste at a dumpyard within or outside the city haphazardly. Experts believe
that India is following a flawed system
of waste.
·
Poor disposal and
management:
India is turning into one big garbage dump. The problem is assuming gigantic
proportions and the numbers are staggering.
·
Overflowing landfills – Another big worry
that India is currently grappling with is that around 31 million of waste is
being sent directly to our landfills every year and all major landfills in India like Deonar in Mumbai, Ghazipur in Delhi
and Kodungaiyur in Chennai, to name a few, are already functioning way-past
their capacity and are over-flowing dreadfully. There is literally no space to
accommodate fresh garbage waste.
Ø Nearly 20% of methane
gas emissions in India is caused by landfills.
Ø The trash dumped in the
landfills is prone to catching fire due to the heat generated by decomposition of waste.
Ø High levels of nickel,
zinc, arsenic, lead, chromium and other metals are part of the solid waste at
landfills in many metro cities, especially in Delhi
